Agricultural research and extension since 1982

 


Hart is South Australia’s premier agronomic field trial site, managed by farmers and industry professionals to provide independent research that is timely, relevant and unbiased, as well as cutting edge and innovative.

Located between Blyth and Brinkworth in South Australia’s Mid-North, Hart is situated on 40 hectares owned by the Hart Field-Site Group Inc.

Our event calendar begins with our annual Getting The Crop In seminar (March). Our trial program is then the focus of our remaining events, all held on site; the Winter Walk (July), main Field Day (September), and at our Spring Twilight Walk (October). Other workshops and demonstrations are also run to further extend research projects to growers.

Soil type
at the site is a clay loam grading to calcareous and dispersive clay. Soil pH values which are slightly alkaline are typical for the soil. A number of soil profiles in the area have been characterised for Yield Prophet and in general have a plant available water capacity (PAWC) or 'bucket size' around 180 - 200 mm.

Hart's average annual rainfall is 400 mm with an average growing season rainfall of 300 mm.

RESEARCH & EXTENSION MANAGER - APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!

The Hart Field-Site Group Inc (Hart) is seeking to employ a motivated and experienced individual to lead our research team and manage Hart’s extensive trial program in the Mid North of South Australia under a fixed-term, 14 month contract.  

Responsibilities cover all aspects of our research program including project management, research program planning and trial design, site coordination and trial management, data analysis and compiling results, support of extension activities and supervision of our research team. 

Working alongside our Research Officer who supports these activities, the Research & Extension Manager will also mentor our Research Intern from February 2026, providing training and support under our Regional Internship in Applied Grains Research project.

this role will suit applicants who enjoy variety and thrive on the challenge of meeting multiple goals and deadlines. 

This fixed-term contract (maternity leave cover) includes a generous hand-over period to ensure a seamless transition.

Hart Beat 67 - July 9, 2025

HART BEAT IS BACK IN 2025

Since 2009 we've been providing Mid North farmers with wheat yield predictions for 8 sites across our region through our HART BEAT newsletter - a great tool to assist with fertliser application and other decision making.

The latest edition, HART BEAT 67, is out now and features our first run of predictions for 2025, plus a review of our 2024 - did we make the 'right' call??

We'll again take you through our RiskWi$e nitrogen decision making process, based on a risk-reward analysis.

Importantly, Yield Prophet® outputs for the Hart site this year are not just simulations – we’re using actual data and important climate information, then explained how we’ve pulled this together to make informed N decisions.

*Predictions for the Hart site in this edition were run after a recent rainfall event (~23 mm), while the remaining 7 sites were run before.
